  • Does my child need speech therapy services?
    Finding answers online regarding speech and language development can be an overwhelming and confusing process! If you are at all concerned about your child's communication skills, book a free consultation to talk to a Speech-Language Pathologist. In this phone consultation, we can discuss your concerns, answer your questions (e.g., regarding funding eligibility/options), and provide recommendations.
  • Does my child need a referral to access services?
    In Alberta, children do not need a referral to access private speech and language services.
  • How many sessions will my child need?
    The number and frequency of sessions will depend on the individual needs of each client. After our initial consultation, we can discuss what treatment plan works best for you and your family.
  • Where do speech therapy sessions take place?
    Therapists come to you! We save you the trouble of driving by providing speech therapy in the comfort of your own home! Alternatively, sessions can also take place in daycares or in the community (e.g., library).
  • How can I book my first consultation?
    To book a consultation, simply fill out the form on our contact page and we will contact you. Currently, Speech Bear is accepting new clients in the Calgary area.
  • How much does speech therapy cost?
    Our current rates are as follows: Formal Assessments (+ Report) $600 60 Minute Sessions $150 30 Minute Sessions $80
  • How do I make a payment?
    Speech Bear offers two ways to pay for your invoices: Jane App - conveniently allows you to pay with your credit card. A 3% processing fee will be applied to your credit card when completing the transaction. E-transfers - to be paid to payment@speechear.ca with no additional fees. Invoices not paid within 10 business days will be charged to the credit card on file. Direct Billing - we are able to directly bill a number of insurance companies as well as FSCD. Please contact us to check if your provider is available for direct billing.
  • Are your services covered by insurance?
    In most cases, insurance will provide some coverage for speech and language therapy. We recommend checking with your employer benefits to determine coverage. Speech therapy is also a a tax-deductible medical expense.
  • Do you direct bill to insurance companies?
    Yes! We are happy to direct deposit to the following insurance companies: Beneva BPA Canada Life Canada Life - PSHCP Canadian Construction Workers Union Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan CINUP ClaimSecure Cowan Insurance Group (managed by Express Scripts Canada) D.A. Johnston Group LiUna Local 183 LiUna Local 506 Manion Manulife Financial Maximum Benefit People Corporation RWAM Simply Benefits TELUS AdjudiCare Union Benefits UV Insurance If your insurer is not listed above, we will provide you with a detailed invoice which can be submitted to your insurance company for reimbursement. Invoices will be made out to the client receiving therapy (i.e., likely your child).
  • Is funding available for my child?
    Your child may qualify for government funding (e.g., FSCD, PUF, or M/M) to support speech and language therapy services. Talk to us to discuss funding options!
  • What is PUF? Does my child qualify for PUF?
    Program Unit Funding (PUF) is provided by Alberta Education and services children who require additional support (i.e., early intervention) to successfully transition to kindergarten and Grade 1. Children can access PUF as early as 2 years and 8 months and for a maximum of 3 years. Parents do not apply for this funding directly. However, you can request for your child's preschool/daycare to apply for this funding on a family's behalf. Children who qualify for PUF must have documentation of a diagnosis impacting development (e.g., ASD, GDD, etc.) or severe delays in key areas (e.g., speech and language). At Speech Bear, we can assess children and provide assessment reports to determine eligibility for PUF services. Please contact us at info@speechbear.com for inquiries.
  • What is FSCD? Does my child qualify for FSCD?
    The Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) program provides funding and support to help children gain the skills needed to function and participate in their homes and communities. To be eligible for the FSCD program: The child must be under 18 years old The child must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident The person applying for the program must be the child's guardian The child must reside in Alberta Medical documentation must be provided confirming a disability or health condition which is: Chronic Developmental, physical, sensory, or neurological Impacting their daily living activities Speech Bear therapists are authorized to support families with FSCD supports for both Behavioural Developmental Support (BDS) and Specialized Services (SS). If your family has been approved for FSCD services and you require a Speech-Language Pathologist, please contact us.
  • What is M/M? Does my child qualify for M/M?
    Mild/Moderate (M/M) funding is provided by Alberta Education and services children as early as 3 years and 8 months and for a maximum of 2 years. It provides support for children with mild to moderate communication disabilities/delays who are at-risk for future learning challenges. Parents do not apply for this funding directly. However, you can request for your child's preschool/daycare to apply for this funding on a family's behalf.
